Do Diet Sodas Have Any Calories?

Published April 1, 2026·Updated April 1, 2026·5 min read

Most diet sodas genuinely contain zero or close to zero calories — the label claim is accurate, not a marketing trick.

Why diet soda has (almost) no calories

Regular soda gets its calories from sugar. Diet versions replace sugar with artificial or natural non-caloric sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, or stevia, which taste sweet but provide negligible or zero calories because the body doesn't metabolize them the same way it does sugar.

Does it still affect weight?

Switching from regular to diet soda removes a genuine source of empty calories, which can support weight loss or maintenance when replacing sugar-sweetened drinks. Some research has questioned whether artificial sweeteners affect appetite or cravings in other ways, but the evidence for a meaningful negative effect on weight is inconsistent, and diet soda still contains far fewer calories than the sugared version either way.

Are there other health considerations?

Diet soda is generally considered safe within normal consumption levels by major health and safety agencies, though it offers no nutritional benefit either — it's a reasonable calorie-free alternative to sugary drinks, not a health food in itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water is still the better default choice for hydration with zero additives, but diet soda is a reasonable lower-calorie substitute for someone trying to move away from regular soda rather than water.
